A simple bike ride on a springlike day turned deadly for a teenager Friday.
Bryce King, 17, of Wilmington, was hit by a DART bus, run over and killed about 6:15 p.m. Friday after swerving into the path of the bus, said Lt. Joseph P. Aviola Jr., a state police spokesman.
Police said the fatal accident closed two-lane Marsh Road between Veale Road and Carrcroft Boulevard for three hours.
According to police reports, King and the DART bus both were headed south on Marsh Road. King moved closer to the lane of traffic while passing a legally parked car, but stayed between the car and the white line marking the edge of the traffic lane.
Aviola said the bus driver, Sharon Anderson, 47, of New Castle, moved left toward the yellow center line to give King more room to get around the car.
Once King passed the car, he suddenly moved into the roadway in front of the bus. He was knocked off his bike and run over by the bus, police said.
Sgt. Kelli Starr-Leach, a spokeswoman for New Castle County police, said King was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:28 p.m.
King was not wearing any reflective gear or a helmet, Aviola said. Aviola said the bus two passengers were not hurt.
On a normal day, police said, the area of Marsh Road where King was killed, can be busy.
The accident, Aviola said, is under investigation.
