Northern Delaware Greenway Nearing Completion

February 6, 2008 Transportation Trails 0

The East Coast Greenway Alliance has been working with the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) and New Castle County to coordinate the installation of three remaining bridges along the Northern Delaware Greenway. Two were installed in the summer of 2007 and the last remaining bridge is scheduled to be installed this February.

When this last bridge is installed, this portion of the Northern Delaware Greenway will be a continuous 7-mile pathway which stretches from the Delaware River to the Brandywine River.

ECG will continue to work in 2008 to solve the last remaining obstruction along the Northern Delaware Greenway. Currently, a condo association near Wilmington has chosen to cut off the Northern Delaware Greenway with a barbed wire fence. ECG is exploring two solutions to this dilemma: working with the condo association to take the fence down, and/or working with New Castle County and DNREC to develop an alternative pathway. When this last major obstruction is solved, the Northern Delaware Greenway will be a continuous 8.5-mile trail linking the Delaware River to the city of Wilmington.
