A pedestrian killed this morning and a cyclist this evening.

I’m hoping that we can get a ghost bike memorial out there tomorrow evening.

ELSMERE — Police are on the scene of a fatal accident that has shut the westbound lanes of Del. 2 in Elsmere.

A bicyclist was killed after he was hit by a vehicle on the elevated portion of highway over railroad tracks, west of Prospect Road.

The accident happened around 4:45 p.m. in the westbound lanes.

The man, believed to be in his 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene, said New Castle County Paramedics Sgt. Kelli Starr-Leach.

Elsmere Police Chief Liam Sullivan said all cars involved in the accident were present at the scene and that New Castle County police were assisting with the investigation.

A mangled bike lay near a body covered in a white sheet as eastbound traffic was shut down. The fatal accident was the second of the day in New Castle County.

“I work at a nearby hospital. I was going over to give CPR, but it was too late,” said Kim Burgos, 38, who was heading home from work with her husband.

“I was walking across the bridge. I heard a loud screeching sounds and I turned around and the cars hit him. It was gruesome,” said David Rawley, who lives in Elsmere.
