07/29/2008 7:41 AM ET
SEAFORD, Del.- Delaware State Police say a Seaford man died Monday from injuries he sustained after a pickup truck rear-ended the bicycle he was riding.
Police say the accident occurred shortly after 11 a.m. in the area of Oak Grove Road just north of Stein Highway.
Investigators learned a Chevrolet pickup, driven by 31-year-old Gerald C. Walter of Seaford, was heading northbound on Oak Grove Road approximately ¾ of a mile north of Stein Highway. Meantime, the bicyclist, identified as 61-year-old Carl R. Boyd, also of Seaford, was riding his bicycle northbound on Oak Grove Road in front of the pickup. Police say he was riding all the way on the right side of the lane, as there were no shoulders.
According to police, as the pickup approached the bicyclist, the pickup’s right front bumper struck the bicyclist in the rear. As a result, Boyd was thrown forward into a ditch. He sustained life-threatening injuries and was pronounced dead at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital.
The cause of this crash is currently under investigation. Police say alcohol is not a factor. Because of the crash, Oak Grove Road was closed approximately three hours. Walter was not injured and was wearing his seatbelt. Boyd was not wearing a bicycle helmet, according to police.
