SUSSEX: Bicyclist killed in crash near Laurel

    Daily Times Staff Report

LAUREL — Police have identified the cyclist killed last night (October 6) on Route 13 as 59-year-old James E. Curtis of Laurel.

Delaware State Police said Curtis died after he was hit by a Honda CRV on Route 13, south of Sycamore Road, east of Laurel.

Police said the accident happened after Curtis crossed through the center median of the highway and rode directly into the path of oncoming SUV driven by Norma S. Buhram, 53 of West Chester, Pa.

The area of the crash was not well lit and the bicycle did not have any lights, police said.

Buhram was not injured. However, two girls, aged 8 and 11, in the SUV suffered minor glass cuts and were treated at a local hospital, police said.

Police said the girls were seated in booster seats and Buhram was wearing a seat belt. Alcohol is not a factor in the crash, police said.

Curtis was not wearing a helmet, police said.

The accident closed both northbound lanes of Route 13 for more than two hours after the accident at 10:14 p.m.

    The crash remains under investigation.
