September 1, 2011 Transportation Trails 4

Newark, DE (September 1, 2011) – The City of Newark announces that construction of the Pomeroy and Newark Rail Trail began on Wednesday, August 31. Newark’s City Council recently awarded the contract to construct the Pomeroy and Newark Rail Trail to Merit Construction Engineers, Inc. in the amount of $2.15 million. Construction is expected to be completed in 2012.  Funding for the project was provided to Newark through the Federal Highway Administration’s SAFETEA-LU Program administered by the State of Delaware’s Department of Transportation.  Merit also constructed the James F. Hall Trail which opened in 2003.

The two (2) mile long Pomeroy and Newark Rail Trail will connect to the James F. Hall Trail (a National Recreation Trail) just south of Wyoming Road and continue north, following the old rail line into the White Clay Creek State Park.  The trail will feature an 8’ wide hard surface, lights for 24-hour use, emergency call boxes, bike racks, benches, information kiosks and maps as well as direct access to the DART Transit Hub, Main Street, Newark Shopping Center, a vast network of trails at the White Clay Creek State Park, the University of Delaware’s Laird Campus and other points of interest and destinations.

I can follow the route of the trail from the end of Wyoming up until the intersection of Cleveland Ave. and Paper Mill Rd. Where does it go after that? It can't go right into the power station.

When you reach Cleveland, the trail will turn due left, crossing over to the NW corner of the Paper Mill-Cleveland intersection. The trail will follow parallel left of the hard pack service road and continue behind housing along Cleveland Ave.
