Now here’s something you don’t see every day. On Sunday June 10, while riding home from Newark and checking the progress of the Pomeroy Rail Trail, we came across a full family (minus the parents!) of juvenile skunks. They are probably long time residents of the abandoned corridor, and their burrow is located in the embankment under the active main line just south of the Cleveland Ave & Chapel St intersection. These critters were docile, and flinched not when Angela (Bike Delaware’s Membership Director) approached for a closer look. She wished she had a treat or two to offer!
It appears a steel frame enclosure is being built through the underpass, and their burrow – as of yet – is untouched. Let’s hope the tunnel serves as a protective barrier for trail users, while allowing these native critters to co-exist among an abundance of wildlife found along the corridor which runs between the James F. Hall Trail in Newark and White Clay Creek State Park! [Related content …]
