2013 Wilmington Grand Prix

The Wilmington Grand Prix returns to Delaware May 17-19, highlighted by world-class racing, a six-block free family street festival, and one of Delaware’s most scenic bike rides. The Grand Prix, now in its seventh year, was recently named one of the Top 10 criterium races in the country by U.S.A. Cycling.

The action begins on Friday, May 17 with the Monkey Hill Time Trial at Brandywine Park (4pm start). More than 200 riders will tackle the cobblestones at Monkey Hill, a course made famous by the Tour DuPont. Spectators can enjoy a picnic in the park while watching the races. In addition, volunteers from JP Morgan Chase will be teaming with the Food Bank of Delaware to stuff more than 3,500 backpacks for needy families throughout Delaware.

On Saturday, May 18, four amateur races and kids sprints take place in the morning, followed by an opening ceremonies parade at 1pm to introduce the professional races taking place that afternoon. In addition, a six-block street festival will take place along Wilmington’s Market Street, offering course-side cafes, a sidewalk sale, and free family rides and attractions.

On Sunday, May 19, riders of all ability levels are encouraged to join Governor Jack Markell in the third annual Governor’s Ride and second annual Delaware Gran Fondo. Ride distances of 15 miles, 30 miles, and 62 miles will be offered, presenting riders with rare access to more than a dozen Brandywine Valley attractions, including rides through Hagley Museum & Gardens and Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library.

Partial proceeds from the Governor’s Ride and Delaware Gran Fondo benefit the Food Bank of Delaware. Additional proceeds from the Wilmington Grand Prix benefit the 21st Century Fund for Delaware’s Children.
