WHAT: Governor Jack Markell, DelDOT Secretary Jennifer Cohan and DNREC Secretary David Small, invite you to attend a ribbon cutting to celebrate the completion of the Junction Breakwater Trail.

WHEN: Monday, July 13, 2015 at 12 p.m.

WHERE: grassy area in front of The Old Screen Door Shop at 209 Monroe Avenue, Lewes, 19958

After more than a decade of work from residents, business owners, and state agencies, this event will celebrate the completion of construction activity for the Junction and Breakwater Trail:

  • A 6-mile trail that connects Lewes and Cape Henlopen State Park to Rehoboth Beach.
  • The trail has two bridges, including an 80-foot-long railroad bridge originally built in 1913 that crosses Holland Glade.

I am working with the Lewes Historic Byway. I would like to be informed of the future events that bikede.org has planned. I missed the 2015 summit and would like to be informed of the 2016 Summit and future events.

    Thanks

Nice to have opened a new section but the rest of the trail is in bad shape. Haven’t been on it I awhile and used it recently (Aug, 2015) and got two flats before I got to the end because of how bad it is now. Won’t be using it again any time soon.

The construction of new trail between Gills Neck Rd (in front of Hawkseye) and Freeman Hwy (just east of Kings Hwy cutoff) is a great addition to the Junction-Breakwater trail. I ride the “Grand Loupe” daily: South Rehoboth-cross the canal bridge- Junction-Breakwater trail- Freeman Hwy Bridge- past the Ferry Terminal- Henlopen State Park- Gordon’s Pond Trail- Rehoboth Beach.

The four greatest danger spots are (in order of their danger) 1. crossing Holland Glade road at trailhead. 2. negotiating Rehoboth Traffic Circle. 3. crossing the steel bridge in Rehoboth. 4. crossing Gills Neck Rd at trailhead.

I don’t mind the condition of the Junction-Breakwater trail. I just deal with it. Without the trail, I would be forced back out on the highway. We really do need to solve the problem of pedestrian and bicycle crossing of the steel drawbridge in Rehoboth. With inclement weather, that bridge becomes very treacherous for a bicycle rider.
