Delaware’s Biggest-Ever Cycling Project Is Underway in the Christina River

If you’ve driven north into Wilmington on I95 anytime recently, you might have noticed some mysterious activity – including two huge cranes – happening in the Christina River:

Looking north towards Wilmington from the south bank of the Christina River. Construction equipment and a large crane are actually in the river. Another large crane is on the riverbank. (The football field-long bicycle bridge over the river requires the construction of two mid-river supports.)

This is Delaware’s biggest-ever cycling project. It’s the final missing piece of an over 7 mile long bikeway extending from the Wilmington Riverfront to downtown New Castle. Read more about this remarkable project here:

  1. Nice to read some positive apolitical news today.

    • Michael Reilly, in the very recent past spending millions of dollars on cycling infrastructure might have been *extremely* controversial and “political.” For some reason, however, it seems to have gotten less controversial recently. It’s almost as if people’s appetite for controversy has been re-directed elsewhere and there’s just no energy left over for complaining about “wasting” money on bicycling.

    • Bike Delaware – I guess we’ve finally reached the conclusion that spending $$$ on “infrastructure” that will be used by a few is where the $$$ is going to go.

    • Lloyd E Layfield Sr, we don’t agree, obviously. We think Delaware is building a long-term asset that will save people money, improve our health, boost tourism and even spur economic development.

    • Chris says:

Some would argue that a majority of government funding in the state is spent for creation of vehicular highway/roadway and/or repairs. Yet people rarely complain about that. Nothing wrong with alternative transportation funding for bike/pedestrian trailways. More funding is needed for reducing the amount of vehicles on the road. Realistically, vehicular funding will always be a priority, and as you drive the roads of this state that they pay for, I guarantee you won’t be complaining that is a “waste of money”.

  2. I noticed this from I-95 Tuesday before Noon!! I was hoping this was the reason why!!! Yes!! Allison Wong Neil Hickey Ari Lee Carol Giampietro Michele Borzio Mark Smith Sean McNeice Jay Gundel

  3. Wow, this is very cool! I can’t wait to ride down to New Castle across this bridge. Thx for sharing.

  4. When will this be accessible…I can’t wait to ride it

  5. Jennifer Stevenson Kulas Woo Hoo!

  6. Willis Phelps Jr. says:

The inforstruture is getting repaired, slowly, areas in the cities east and south side are in need of this. Along the Christina (And the Brandywine!), going on to the Delaware River into Old New Castle will be a plus. The link up to the Greenway/Mike Castle Trail Will Prove to be beneficial to our tourism and community growth also. I have meet folks biking (I walk!), Riding all the way up from Chesapeake City, and they LOVE it! SADDLE UP AND RIDE!

  7. John says:

OK, so when will the NEW CASTLE COUNTY INDUSTRIAL TRACK GREENWAY be done? I see the bridge, but the decking the rest of the way is still not done.
