I live near a trail in Delaware but there is no good way to bike to it from my house

This little bridge recently connected the Jefferson Farms neighborhood in New Castle to the Wilmington-New Castle Greenway. Before this bridge, people living right next to the greenway - just yards away - had to drive miles to get to it.

Every bicycle project has to start life in a plan.

The Delaware Bicycle Plan (currently being created) is a once-in-a-decade opportunity to get the bicycle improvements your community needs in an official plan. So if you miss this opportunity, your next opportunity may not come around again until 2027!

If your community has a great nearby trail (either existing, in design or being planned) but lacks a good way to access it, let us know below! And also check out the upcoming Delaware Bicycle Plan meetings (also below) where you can talk directly to the people putting the plan together. (And let your neighbors know about these meetings. One person demanding a bicycle connection is a crank. But five people demanding a bicycle connection are irresistible!)

Remember: the last Delaware Bicycle Plan was in 2005. You probably don’t want to wait another decade for the next one.

I live within a half mile of a major trail in Delaware but there isn't a low stress bicycle route for me and my neighbors to get to the trail!
Name of Nearby Trail (if known)

Being as specific as possible, where could a low stress connection be built in your community that would enable everyone in your community - no matter their age or ability - to be able to bicycle safely right from their front doors to the nearby trail?

    1. sharing on Facebook Group Page, Delaware-historic preservation celebration.

    2. Lewden Green Park, great paths, for walking and biking. Under utilized due to lack of parking. limited parking on Airport Road, most spaces used by residents across the road. No parking on E Main St. in Christiana. Additional pathways could be added.

    3. A trail from western Newark to White Clay Creek State Park would be great. A trial connecting Fair Hill Natural Resources Management Area and White Clay Creek State Park would make me so happy.

    4. Would love to see bike trails on roads that are separated from car traffic. That way we could access everything and not have to disturb more natural areas to reach existing trails. Plus we could bike to work, school, shop. Etc etc

    5. A trail connecting the bike/pedestrian path on New Linden Hill road with the trail system in White Clay Creek would be great. Right now it just ends at a busy shopping center on Polly Drummond Road.

    6. Need a safe bike trail on Cedar Neck Road in Ocean View so we can bike to Delaware Seashore Fresh Pond trails.

    7. A safe way to get from the greenway (e.g. Shipley rd) to the Brandywine Hundred library/Talley Day Park. The intersection of Shipley and Wilson/Murphy is very dangerous for bike traffic.

    8. Hercules Road is extremely dangerous once it narrows to a single lane. Also rt 48 from Hercules to where it connects with rt41 is highly dangerous. No shoulder at all and cars and semis travel the road at high speeds.

    9. I have many miles of trails behind my house in Iron Hill park. We need to connect them to City of Newark. Now that DART has enabled buses to carry bikes, I’ve requested a bus stop be placed at Iron Hill park. Also many housing development along old Baltimore Pike can be connected (on Iron Hill Side) which would allow kids to ride to friends houses instead of being driven .25 miles.

    10. It’d be nice to have a few safe crossing points across Route 13 to get to Trap Pond and the like.

    11. Would like to see 52 turned into a much safer trail as one enters Greenville and into wilmington. Would be great if it would safely connect to greenway.

    12. White clay to newark to Chesapeake city…. not an existing trail but would be nice!!

    13. Yes, I’m near the northern Delaware greenway but the way along marsh road to it is very hazardous under I-95
