Frequently Asked Questions

Making cycling and walking safe, convenient and fun in Delaware

  • What is Bike Delaware?
    • Bike Delaware is a donor-supported 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization dedicated to making cycling and walking safe, convenient and fun transportation options for everyone in Delaware through policy research and nonpartisan advocacy.
  • Is Bike Delaware a bike club?
    • No, but we do organize and run one amazing ride in Kent County in September. It’s the largest bike ride in Delaware and it’s now been going on for 36 years!
  • Is Bike Delaware a government organization?
    • No. Not only is Bike Delaware formally an independent, non-governmental organization (“NGO”), we are also (and this is more unusual) 100% financially independent of any and all government agencies or appropriations. We receive zero funding from government at any level (which makes us solely accountable to our members).
  • Is Bike Delaware a political organization?
    • Yes: politics is at the heart of what Bike Delaware is. That includes both lobbying for legislation and even getting involved in elections. But there is a bright red line we never cross in any of our political activities: we are bikepartisan. We never endorse, or campaign in any way on behalf of, any candidate for elected government office.
  • I’m not a cyclist…”
    • A lot of people tell us “I’m not a cyclist” but, when we talk to them some more, it turns out that they actually love cycling! There is not some magic threshold to qualify to be a ‘cyclist’. If you like to bike, then you’re a ‘cyclist’!
  • How do I get involved with Bike Delaware?
    • Become an advocate!
    • Sign up for our occasional emails with links to new web site articles from the previous week.
    • Like us on facebook.
    • Follow us on twitter.
    • Bike Delaware hosts the annual Everyone Gets Home Summit in the spring in Dover. Attending the summit is a great way to get informed and start to get more involved.
    • Think about how your community could become more walkable and bikeable if it had better infrastructure and then, if you think you have a great idea for improved infrastructure, contact us.
    • Bike Delaware needs volunteers. Rather than try to fit volunteers into pre-conceived slots, our more usual approach is to talk to a potential volunteer and discuss how they might use their skills or follow their passion in a way that helps advance Bike Delaware’s mission. For students, more formal internship opportunities are available. Please reach out to us to explore the opportunities that fit your interests and time.
    • Ride with us in the annual Amish Country Bike Tour.
    • Did we mention becoming a donor? Bike Delaware receives zero financial support from government. That includes not contracting with government at any level for services. Instead of revenue from government sources, we rely on the financial support of our membership who support our work because they want cycling and walking in Delaware to be safe, convenient and fun transportation options.
