I live in Montgomery County, MD. Their Bikeway map is well done, see link above.
I relocated to De. 4 yr ago from NW Pa. and brought my bike, expecting to continue to exercise in this pleasant way but the congestion and aggressive driving here (I live in Newark) have made me feel that I am risking my life to ride on the road. The trails I have found seem to go no more than a mile or two and I have to drive to get to them. My bike stands in a closet and I re-inflate the tires periodically to protect them.
I applaud the effort to make De. more biker friendly. I would ride again if I could feel safe. E.C.Mitchell
Reply to E.C Mitchell- Yes I agree! I got a bike to ride off road and just started to ride to work to save gas and get excersise. I travel between Claymont and Newark each day by car, I’m taking the bus and riding 3 miles in and out to work. I’m seeing a lot of the issues facing cyclists vs motorist. It’s kind of discouraging in a way. I found a website called veloroutes.org. There you can trace a route on a map and it gives you miles, how long it will take, and elevation grades. You can export it to gps, Or what I do is take a screenshot and print it out. I have issues during the week when I get done work I cant ride off road since the parks are closed so now I’m mapping Developments around my area. Driving there, parking and riding around based on what I’ve mapped out. It’s great!! I get my excercise after work (if I don’t ride in that is 🙂 ) and it’s very quiet and hardly any traffic. Hopefully one day motorist will understand bike are vehicles too and respect and share the road. Thanks!!!

I’m 57, in pretty good shape. June 17 I was hit by a car while riding my Trex Nav. 2.0 on rt 272 in Maryland. It broke my leg, banged me up pretty good. I understand the guy was texting, and has no insurance. The orthopedic surgeon said riding bikes on the road is the most dangerous sport in USA now. I remember 50 yrs ago being able to ride where ever I wanted and being safe from cars. We need to end distracted driving, end texting / phoning.
