Why Serving on Bike Delaware’s Board Is Important to Me

“When I learned that Bike Delaware was instrumental in the drastic increase in the League of American Bicyclists (LAB)’ ranking of bicycle-friendly states, I knew Bike Delaware was doing something right and doing something BIG. This LAB program recognizes best practices, actions by state departments of transportation and state legislatures. They are interested in long-term policy change, not just riding in beautiful scenery. Delaware was rated thirty-one ten years ago, in 2008. In 2009, shortly after Bike Delaware was formed, Delaware’s ranking jumped 22 points to number 9. In 2015 Delaware moved up to the third most bicycle-friendly state in the country and then held that rank for two years. Bike Delaware works hard to change policy with legislators and DelDOT. I got involved with Bike Delaware’s board to build on this fantastic work and make Delaware a safer and more enjoyable place for bicyclists.”

Are you thinking that you might like to become more involved with Bike Delaware to help us make cycling and walking way better in Delaware? If you are, that’s a brilliant idea. Here are three different ways to follow up on that idea:

  1. Become a member! This is the easiest. And it’s also really important. Bike Delaware receives zero financial support from government at any level. We also do not contract with government at any level. We are a totally independent, member-supported nongovernmental nonprofit. We rely on the financial support of our members who support our work because they want cycling and walking in Delaware to be safe, convenient and fun for everyone.
  2. Join us at the Summit! Want to see what effective advocacy in action looks like and also get to know Bike Delaware better? If you can take a day off from work, register for the 2018 Walkable Bikeable Delaware Summit in Dover (Thursday, May 3). You won’t regret it.
  3. Talk to us! If you have any special skills (fundraising, IT, marketing, graphic design, government relations etc. etc.) or just a whole lot of energy and enthusiasm for helping your fellow Delawareans, we need you
