Making cycling and walking safe, convenient and fun in Delaware

To Judge Rocanelli

November 15, 2015 Injuries and Fatalities Legal and Enforcement 4

Today is the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims. On this day especially, the tragic death of my son Phillip last year in Hockessin reminds me of the vulnerability of cyclists when motorists drive recklessly. As with other vulnerable members of society, cyclists therefore depend on the protection of the police and courts.

As the Court in the coming weeks decides on an appropriate penalty for the motorist who killed Phillip, I ask the Court to consider not only what justice for Phillip demands but also how the penalty might reflect the public’s larger interest in preventing more unbearable tragedies like ours in the future.

  2. I wish I could have known Phillip. From all that I have seen and heard, he was a wonderful person. Such a terrible, tragic loss.

But by the grace of God…

When the driver is at fault, the system needs to stop minimizing bicycle and pedestrian “accidents” by treating them all as traffic violations. Many of them are criminal acts of negligence and should be treated as so.
