Fear and Gratitude

We are grateful for the completion of the Castle Trail link into Delaware City in May (and also for the paving of a final unpaved section west of the Marina). Delawareans can now cycle on an unbroken stretch of smooth asphalt for 14 miles from Delaware City to Chesapeake City, the longest trail in Delaware! (Click on slide to see ribbon cutting ceremony.)

We had to be patient about the paving of a half-mile unfinished section, but this was finally completed in October. (Click on slide to read about some of the people who made the Castle Trail happen.)

Also in October, Governor Markell cut the ribbon on a 1.1-mile section of trail from Gills Neck Road to Savannah Road in Lewes – the first phase of what will eventually be a 10 foot wide paved trail that extends a total of 17 miles all the way to Georgetown, creating an even longer trail than the Castle Trail! How about a football field-long bike bridge? To complete a 7-mile trail connecting the Wilmington Riverfront to downtown New Castle? (Click on slide to read more about the groundbreaking for this project - the largest bike project in the history of Delaware - earlier this month.)

Bike Delaware has been advocating for the Wilmington-New Castle Greenway since 2010. We are grateful that we have not been alone in this! (Click on slide to read more about our far-sighted friends who helped make this project happen.)

Delaware has been amazingly lucky to have as its governor for the last 8 years the most bicycle-friendly governor in America. (Click on slide to read more about Jack Markell's pro-cycling record.)

On May 5, 2016, Governor Markell signed the Healthy and Transit-Friendly Development Act with its lead sponsors Senator Harris McDowell and Representative Ed Osienski. (Click on slide to read more about this "Bikes+Transit" law, which links future economic development in Delaware with improved public health, making it easier for seniors to "age in place", reduced air pollution and more cost-effective provision of public infrastructure and services.)
