Three crashes over the weekend left one pedestrian and one cyclist dead and another pedestrian critically injured.

Joanne “Jo-Jo” Johnson, 67, a long-time employee at the News Journal, was struck by a minivan and killed Friday afternoon west of New Castle as she tried to cross Dupont Highway (US 13) just north of  the US 13/US 40 split. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

In a facebook posting, a friend of Ms. Johnson’s wrote that “she loved her 2 boys more than her own life. With each grandchild she grew happier and happier. She had 8, 3 granddaughters and 5 grandsons. She walked everywhere she needed to get to.”

On Saturday evening at about 8:30PM, Eloy Sandoval, 44, of Newark, was trying to cross Route 273 (Ogletown Road) east of Newark was struck and killed by a car. The motorist was approaching Ruthar Drive when he lost control of the car, the car left the roadway and entered the center median, rotated counter-clockwise and then continued into the intersection where the cyclist was struck.

On Sunday morning at about 11AM, a pedestrian was struck on Foulk Road in the Brandywine Hundred area north of Wilmington. He was rushed to Christiana Hospital where he was admitted in critical condition.

Between a quarter and a third of all traffic fatalities in Delaware are pedestrians and cyclists.
